Police remind the public to plan a safe ride home for the holidays

As the holiday season is upon us, Coquitlam RCMP is reminding the public to plan safe and sober ride home.

In British Columbia, it is illegal to consume alcohol in most public places (other than a licensed premise) or in a vehicle. In addition, the Criminal Code of Canada prohibits anyone from operating a motor vehicle while their ability is impaired by alcohol and/or a drug and/or if their blood/alcohol concentration is over .08.

Impaired driving can have tragic outcomes, but it doesn’t have to be that way, said Media Relations officer for Coquitlam RCMP, Corporal Alexa Hodgins. Impaired driving can be completely preventable through proper planning and making good decisions before or after consuming drugs or alcohol. Instead of driving, people can: appoint a designated driver, stay the night, use a ride-share program or call a taxi.

Operation Red Nose

A safe driving alternative this holiday season is Operation Red Nose.

Operation Red Nose is running this year throughout the Tri-Cities, Burnaby and New Westminster. Their dates of operation are: December 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 22 and 31, 2023. Impaired driving continues to be one of the leading factors in fatal collisions, according to ICBC. On average, there are 17 fatal victims involved in collisions where alcohol, drugs or medication was a contributing factor in the BC Lower Mainland, according to the last 5-year average.

This holiday season, Coquitlam RCMP are asking drivers to plan ahead, leave your keys at home, and find an alternative ride. Police in British Columbia want everyone to have a safe holiday season where they can spend time with their loved ones.
