If you see a group of grade 11 and 12 students running through your neighbourhood in two straight lines next week, don’t be surprised: it’s the RCMP Youth Academy completing their daily physical education.

Prince George RCMP, in partnership with School District 57, is proud to be hosting the 2023 RCMP Youth Academy. Although it was put on hold for a few years, the Youth Academy is back in full swing this spring break. 19 students have been selected to participate in this training, which aims to give the students a sneak-peak at what the RCMP training academy, known as Depot, is like.

The program runs for a full week between March 12-17 and is being held at D.P. Todd Secondary School. The students and their Mountie facilitators will sleep, eat and learn at the school. Students will participate in activities such as drill practice, handcuffing, and running the Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE). They will also take classes in Indigenous Policing, Criminal Code offenses and powers of arrest, among other subjects.

The students participate in mock court trials and several different live-action scenarios that test the knowledge they have gained throughout the week. They will meet with police officers from Forensic Identification, Media Relations, Police Dog Tactics and even take a tour of the RCMP hangar. Their days are long, beginning at 6:00 a.m. and running until 11:00 p.m. every day, simulating the workload we experience as recruits at Depot, states Cpl. Jennifer Cooper, Media Relations Officer for the Prince George RCMP.

Residents around D.P. Todd can expect to see the students in their community while the Youth Academy is running. So, don’t be alarmed if there are more police cars in your neighbourhood than usual – chances are it’s the Youth Academy hard at work!
