Between September 11th, 2023 and September 17th, 2023, The Campbell River RCMP responded to 373 calls for service bringing the total for calls this year to date to 13,463.

Tip of the Week:

Serial numbers, serial numbers, serial numbers. If it’s of value, please ensure that you record the serial numbers of your belongings. Simply taking pictures of the items and their serial numbers and storing the photos in the cloud or a similar digital storage system is a quick and easy way to keep track of your valuables.

Items that are stored outside are highly susceptible to be stolen. This is especially true of items like bicycles and power tools like lawn mowers. Police often recover these items and at times are unable to return them to the owners or generate charges against the person they were found with only because the owner was unable to provide a serial number as proof of ownership.

It is also extremely important that people keep track of their firearm serial numbers for reporting purposes if they are ever stolen. Again, it allows police to return the item if ever recovered and enables charges to be laid against the individuals the firearms are found with.

Calls of Interest

2023-13400: Firearms

On September 16th, 2023 at approximately 2:00 pm, the Campbell River RCMP received a report of shots fired in the area of Nunn’s Creek Park.

All on-duty Campbell River RCMP officers responded with assistance from Police Dog Services and officers from the BC Highway Patrol.

Police located many people in the area and one individual attempted to evade police by hiding. When the individual was found they were in the vicinity of multiple firearms. Three firearms and ammunition were seized.

A 33 year old man was arrested at the scene and the investigation is ongoing. 

2023-13006: Bike Theft

On September 9th, 2023, the Campbell River RCMP received a report of a custom mountain bike worth approximately $18,000 stolen from the 3700 block of the South Island Highway.

Members of Campbell River RCMP’s Crime Reduction Unit located the bicycle in Nunn’s Creek park on September 12th, 2023, while conducting another investigation.

Officers were able to return the bicycle to its rightful owner that night.

2023-13209: Suspicious Circumstance

On September 13, 2023, The Campbell River RCMP received a report of a suspicious male chopping up bikes with a Dremel style hand tool in the 2100 block of 15th Ave. Police arrived and located a male in the area of the report who was identified by a witness.

The man had been riding a LIV brand bicycle at the time he was located and the bicycle was seized by police for investigation as it was believed to be stolen.

Shortly after the bicycle was seized, the Campbell River RCMP received a report from an individual who had her bicycle stolen overnight in the 500 block of South Dogwood Street, she provided her serial number which matched that of the seized bicycle.

Police later arrested the suspect and charges of Possession of Stolen Property have been recommended.

This is an excellent example of how investigations into theft are able to be solved, said Cst Maury Tyre A witness lets people know of suspicious activity in progress that we were able to investigate and a property owner was able to provide a serial number for their stolen property which provides police the proof they need to pursue charges. Without the concerned citizen and the bike owner with a serial number, the bike likely would have never made it’s way back to it’s rightful owner and nobody would have been charged. 

2023-13395: Collision 

On September 16th, 2023 at approximately 1 pm, Campbell River RCMP were called to the 3900 block of the South Island Highway after a serious motor vehicle collision.

A Toyota Van had been witnessed crossing the center line into oncoming traffic. An astute driver in the oncoming lane had to take evasive action, but the van still struck his vehicle pushing his car into a power pole. Fortunately, nobody in the vehicle that was struck were seriously injured.

The driver of the van was found unconscious behind the wheel by witnesses following the collision and emergency services were called. The driver was woken up and determined to have not suffered any serious injuries as a result of the collision.

The investigation into the collision indicated that the driver of who had crossed the center line had medical concerns that may have caused him to fall asleep behind the wheel.

This was the second incident in a week, where a driver caused an accident due to falling asleep at the wheel, said Cst Maury Tyre. We cannot stress enough the need for people to ensure that they are fully awake and actually capable of getting behind the wheel. Lack of sleep can create a severe level of impairment that puts lives at risk.
