Traffic offences land 3 cars behind bars and their drivers with charges

The night of November 26, 2023 started quickly for Port Alberni RCMP detachment with four traffic related reports resulting in three vehicles being impounded.

An officer conducting patrols on Stamp Avenue observed a vehicle driving at a high rate of speed and utilized their onboard radar to confirm the vehicle’s speed at 97 kilometers per hour in the 50 kilometer zone. The vehicle was stopped several blocks away and the driver was issued a fine for excessive speed. Under the motor vehicle act the vehicle was also impounded for 7 days. At the same time front line officers with dispatched to a vehicle that had just driven into the front of Canadian Tire, located in the 3500 block of Johnston Street.

Once they arrived officers quickly started into a drug impaired driving investigation. After preforming poorly at a Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST) the driver was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle, where subsequently a sample of their blood was obtained for testing at the RCMP lab. This driver, a man in his 20s, was served a Driving Prohibition and the vehicle was impounded. He will need to speak to his actions in Court come 2024.

Meer minutes after officers arrived at the last collision another report of a collision in the 3100 block of 9 Ave was reported where a car had struck a parked vehicle. Through their investigation officers believed the driver was impaired by alcohol and conducted an on scene blood alcohol test, which the driver failed. The woman in her 40’s was issued a driving prohibition under the provinces Immediate Roadside Prohibition program, and as a result, the woman is prohibited from driving for 90 days and her vehicle impounded for 30 days. She also faces administrative fines through ICBC.

Within 30 minutes after the first call for service, officers were dispatched to a female that was struck by a vehicle on the Redford Street extension. Investigators learnt that the suspect vehicle fled the scene and did not check on the female. Witnesses believed there were two vehicles that may have known each other as they both left the scene together. The suspect vehicle is only described as a smaller car that was being followed by a white SUV. The victim was treated by BC EHS and transported to a local hospital for further care. The victim sustained minor injuries and was released from hospital several hours later.

It is extremely concerning to see this behavior from so many drivers in such a short period of time, stated Constable Richard Johns. Impaired driving laws are nothing new, if you have consumed liquor, cannabis or other recreational drugs do not get behind the wheel.
