Death in Langley explosion not homicide

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has returned an investigation back to the Langley RCMP after human remains were located at the site of a recent explosion.

Background:

On October 22, 2023 at approximately 2:17 p.m., the Langley RCMP responded to the scene of an explosion at a residence in the 24300-block of 8 Avenue, Langley, BC. The responding members located an outbuilding on fire at the rural property which was extinguished by the Township of Langley Fire Department. During the processing of the scene, firefighters located human remains inside the outbuilding. IHIT took conduct of the investigation.

Update:

After several days of investigation, IHIT investigators, in consultation with the BC Coroners Service, have determined that this was not a homicide and will be transitioning the investigation back to the Langley RCMP.

The Langley RCMP Serious Crimes Unit will be continuing the investigation into the circumstances that led to the explosion.

"IHIT would like to thank their partners at the Langley RCMP, the Integrated Forensic Identification Services (IFIS), the RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU), the RCMP Clandestine Laboratories Enforcement and Response team (CLEAR) as well as the BC Coroners Service for their assistance with this investigation," says Corporal Esther Tupper of IHIT.
