Hundreds of New Year's Eve revellers travelling in the Langford and View Royal area likely had a pleasant conversation with police, but not all found the conversation so pleasant. Members of the British Columbia Highway Patrol – Capital Regional District – Integrated Road Safety Unit (BCHP-CRD-IRSU), conducted impaired driving road checks in the area resulting in 7 impaired and 2 prohibited drivers being taken off the road. 6 vehicles were impounded for periods from 24 hours to 30 days. 17 violation tickets were also issued for other offences.

Staff Sergeant Adam Tallboy, the acting OIC of BCHP Vancouver Island said, Many of the vehicles stopped at the road checks were either on their way to or were coming from New Year’s Eve events with drivers that made smart choices and were found to be sober. Fortunately, we were able to remove those who made poor choices from the road before they caused injury or death to themselves or others.

This wrapped up a month-long Winter Impaired Driving Campaign that police officers across the province took part in. Impaired driving remains one of the top causes of criminal death in British Columbia. Although the Winter Impaired Driving Campaign is now over, police across the province are always looking for impaired drivers. Collisions caused by impaired drivers are 100% preventable if people find alternate ways of getting around including taxi, public transit, or designated drivers.
